Who is the Adventure Hermit?
Hello there! I’m thrilled to introduce myself to you. I am Joe Trey, Chief Hermit at Adventure Hermit Travel.
My passion for traveling originated from my childhood musings and limitless imagination. As a family, we only had the chance to travel once by plane, and my mother received her first passport at the age of 70 when we brought her through the Panama Canal. In essence, adventure was not a common practice for my family.
Our family excursions were restricted to a few camping trips and the traditional Thanksgiving road trip to see my dad’s relatives. Although it was chaotic thanks to the holiday travel, sitting in traffic from Connecticut to Frederick on I95 South, we found solace in stopping by the road and eating peanut butter and banana sandwiches from the back of our car.
When I was twelve, I was involved in a car accident that nearly claimed my life. This near-death experience convinced me I was supposed to be a rockstar — that’s apparently how a 12-year-old’s brain works. This experience led me to pursue music. I eventually studied music and composition at the University of Connecticut, hoping to become a rockstar. However, fate had its way, and I strategically avoided any chance of stardom or fame. Eventually, I realized I enjoyed traveling to the gigs more than the late nights, cheap beer, and lousy sound systems.
I’ve traveled thousands of miles in the last two decades and captured even more photographs. I’ve amassed countless stories, from the most obscure locations to the most famous landmarks. Our goal at Adventure Hermit Travel is to inspire and provide the support and resources needed to plan your extraordinary adventures.
Well, what we have here is a hermit that likes people. My monicker results from my passion for solo travel, but don’t let that deceive you. I am a bit of a social butterfly who loves planning travel adventures for my family and friends.
While traditional hermits may prefer caves and hovels, I prefer a more lively scene. Others might think being surrounded by people would ruin my “hermit” cred. Indeed, it’s a possibility, but it’s a chance I gladly take to see the world!
The Adventure Hermit Family
The story of how my wife, Beth, and I began our adventures may seem like a small and insignificant event to some. But to us, it was the start of a beautiful journey.
We continued to explore new places, pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones with each Mystery Trip. Even when our daughter, Sophia, was born, we refused to let our wanderlust fade. We were determined to keep traveling as a family, and with Beth’s unwavering support, we obtained Sophia’s (our first-born daughter) passport at just 18 months old, even when she didn’t know where we were headed; what a woman!
We were blessed to have the opportunity to travel the world together as a family, thanks to a flexible year-round school schedule that allowed us to take advantage of off-season rates and avoid crowds.
Our adventures have taught us that anything is possible with determination and a supportive partner. When I turned 40, I treated the family to Disney World in Orlando. As our trip wrapped up and we were headed home, I took a detour. The next thing everyone knew, we were headed on a three-day Disney Cruise. It went so well that our next mystery trip was a trans-Atlantic trip to Barcelona!
The Thrill of the Open Road is not just for Motorcyclists
You may notice many of my journal entries involve two wheels; riding is my preferred mode of solo travel, but a small amount of my overall adventures. Beth, my wife, doesn’t ride, but she took a motorcycle training class and got her endorsement before we got married. She wanted to understand my love for bikes, and I’m so glad she did.
My two-wheel expeditions have allowed our family vacations to be filled with adventure and picturesque locations. Some of the most successful Adventure Hermit Travel guides started with me on my bike, taking my time, snapping photos, and exploring new routes, sparing the family from my endless request for just one more of my detours. A Term my wife affectionately calls “the Trey way.” At least, I assume it’s affectionate.
For example, My 40 40 40 Ride was a hoot! Forty hours, forty mountain passes because I turned 40. There’s no way we were going to recreate that in a car. However, that journey inspired me to create a family-friendly road trip spanning four days, covering around 700 miles, and we were never more than four hours from home!
Ultimately, my diverse forms of travel, motorcycles, hiking, canoes, boats, cars, trucks, and whatever else comes my way, provide me with a unique way to find unexpected, often overlooked, but accessible destinations.

The Adventure Hermit Travel Mission
If it’s not obvious so far, I love travel. I have used every spare moment and dollar earned to discover new places. It seriously is the best way to open our eyes to this beautiful world we live in. And I believe everyone should be able to experience it!
Don’t let time and money hold you back; there are many ways to make it happen —eat out less, drop cable TV and a few streaming services. I’ve been lucky enough to go on some epic adventures, but I also know firsthand the challenge of limited vacation time.
So, I break up trips into bite-sized chunks that I can accomplish. My family and I prioritize living debt-free to focus on creating unforgettable memories. It’s not easy, but our sacrifices allow us to share epic adventures.
Life is too short not to explore this wondrous planet. At Adventure Hermit Travel, we strive to help others make those travel dreams a reality for everyone willing to take the first step.
“Our mission is to provide the most interesting, top quality experiences for adventurous people like you who wish to discover the remarkable landscape all over north america “
Adventure Hermit Travel Recognition
Imagine my surprise when an internationally recognized magazine decided to publish my very first travel article. From there, it was adventure after adventure, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
But let me tell you, my greatest joy comes from being able to share my wanderlust with others without any pesky restrictions. I may not have a wall full of internet medals, but I have a tribe of happy customers, caring friends, and loving family members. And, in my book, that’s worth a whole lot more. And that’s why I do itI

Once upon a time . . . don’t so many great stories start off that way?
My oldest daughter, Sophia, who was four then, astounded me with her adventurous genius. On that fateful day, my little adventurer was strapped into her car seat and faced with the terrible chore of running errands. I, too, was not excited but had come to accept adulting as a way of life.
I could hear the wailing before I saw it. As I turned around, she burst forth, “I Don’t want to go anywhere. I want to go somewhere!” she declared with the gusto of someone who knows what life’s really about. I still tear up when I think of her profound words.
Life should be about exploring, not shopping! And so, spurred on by this tiny philosopher, we set off in search of ice cream. But soon, global adventure was to follow, and of course, more ice cream.
Our adventures continue to this day. Neither of us likes shopping all that much, but planning the next adventure or putting our faith in another mystery trip is always on the menu!
